A grocery brand in Spain, ranked on recipes and origin stories that editors would keep

A coupon pop-up is not a food page. The campaign followed the recipes, the origin story, and the desks that still cook on the page.

The brief

Campo Verde sells pulses, oils, and jarred vegetables in Spanish grocery. Their organic traffic was branded and coupon-driven. Recipe URLs existed because a content agency had produced them; they ranked for almost nothing because the citations pointing at the domain were deal sites, browser extensions, and a couple of English healthy-eating blogs.

Spanish recipe search is crowded with large publishers. A small brand site will not knock those over with a directory link. It can, sometimes, become a cited source in the pieces those publishers already rank, and it can rank for longer, more specific recipe-plus-origin queries.

The brand team wanted “food influencers.” Influencers are a different channel. This engagement was editorial mentions on indexed pages. We kept the scopes from eating each other.

What we did

Six recipe URLs and one origin story. Publishers: Spanish food writing, regional magazines that still do produce pieces, and two national desks that run recipes with named authors. We read whether the rest of the outbound links went to producers, books, and shops — or to whoever bought a package that month.

Pitches offered a method and an origin note an editor could keep: why a particular bean behaves in a stew, how the jarred vegetable is actually made, a substitution that is honest. We did not ask for “best organic pulses España 2025.”

Anchors were recipe language and origin language. Product URLs were not the default destination; people searching a stew are not looking for a SKU. The product URL received mentions only where the sentence was about buying the jar.

Coupon sites were not approached. Existing coupon links were left; cleaning them was a separate, later conversation. Adding more would have been the previous vendor’s instinct.

Sessions across the engagement

Dec 2024–Jun 2025. Organic is the destination URLs in this brief; referrals are clicks from accepted placements.

What moved

Recipe organic sessions rose 53 percent across the six URLs. The origin story doubled from a small base. Rankings on long recipe queries improved; head terms stayed with the large publishers, as expected.

Thirty-one food-desk placements. Zero new coupon links. Referral traffic from recipes was the kind that lands on a method and sometimes continues to a product URL — a path we can see without pretending it is a perfect attribution model.

Campo Verde’s content calendar now starts from queries a food desk would recognise. The previous calendar started from SKUs. That change is why the next recipes will be easier to pitch.

Spanish recipe search is owned by large publishers for the obvious dish names. We did not pitch those fights. We pitched the longer queries where a producer’s method is actually the point: a stew with a named bean, a dressing that depends on a specific oil, an origin paragraph a food writer can keep. Head terms stayed with the magazines. The brand site became a source those magazines could cite, and a ranker on the longer phrases.

Coupon sessions still exist in Analytics. We left them out of the success chart so we were not taking credit for pop-up traffic. If a later engagement cleans that noise, it will be a separate brief with a separate before-and-after. Mixing coupon clicks into a recipe lift is how grocery brands convince themselves that deal sites were a channel. They are a leak.

What we declined

  • Coupon and deal networks.
  • English healthy-eating blogs.
  • Influencer round-ups that never index.

Autumn recipes are in draft. Outreach is already talking to two desks, with the URLs live. That order — page first — is now house style.

Grocery brands love a deal-site spike. It photographs well in a weekly dashboard and teaches the domain all the wrong neighbours. Campo Verde’s success chart is recipes and origin, with coupon traffic kept off the slide. If that makes the lift look smaller than a deal-site month, good. Smaller and defensible is the work. A spike you cannot show a food editor is not a channel. It is a leak with a graph.

The six recipe URLs were not chosen because they were the SKUs. They were chosen because a food desk might keep the method. That order is now how the brand briefs us.
