How Spanish-language search behaviour actually differs

People searching in Spanish do not follow the English outline with the nouns swapped. The query is a different object.

English keyword tools are calm and wrong when they are aimed at Spanish. They will happily suggest a translated head term, a volume number that was modelled on another language, and a list of “related” phrases that no speaker would type. The export looks like research. It is a drawing of research.

People searching in Spanish do not follow the English outline with the nouns swapped. They use different modifiers, different levels of formality, and different assumptions about what a useful result looks like. If your Spanish URLs were built by translating the English tree and your link targets followed that tree, you have two problems that look like one.

Queries are local even when the language is shared

“Seguro de coche” in Spain and the same string in Mexico do not carry the same commercial furniture. Insurers, regulation, and the words people use for the product change. A page written for one will rank accidentally in the other only when the index is thin. That is not a strategy. It is a side-effect you should not rely on.

Local modifiers — city, retailer, government body, payment method — show up in Spanish queries the way they do in English, but the inventory of those modifiers is not a translation. “Hacienda,” “SAT,” “AFIP” are not interchangeable footnotes. If the searcher is trying to complete a task that only exists in one country, a pan-Spanish guide is a brochure.

This is the practical reason Spain and Latin America are not one market. Language overlap is real. Demand overlap is a hypothesis you have to test, country by country, query by query.

Same language family. Different objects. A pan-Spanish page that mixes these is a brochure with a language setting.

Informational and transactional language split differently

English SEO culture is obsessed with the difference between “what is” and “buy.” Spanish search has that split too, but the surface forms change. “Cómo,” “precio,” “cita,” “requisitos,” “opiniones” do work that English teams often map onto a single commercial page because the English site had a single commercial page.

You see the damage in titles. A Spanish H1 that is a calque of “Best X Software 2026” can look like English SERMs even when the results page is full of explainers, forums, and government PDFs. Ranking is then a fight against the shape of the index, not a failure of links.

Before you ask for citations, read the current results. If the first page is forums and official pages, a product URL with three editorial mentions will still look like a product URL. The join between on-site SEO and links starts here, not in a prospect list.

Vocabulary is not a thesaurus problem

Computer, ordenador, computadora. Mobile, móvil, celular. The wrong one does not make a page unreadable. It makes the page feel imported. Imported pages get fewer natural mentions because writers do not cite sources that sound like they are from somewhere else, unless the subject is explicitly foreign.

Searchers are also less patient with mixed registers than vendors think. A legal explainer that drops into marketing second person, or a retail page that suddenly uses vosotros in a Mexican template, is a trust leak. You will not see it in a crawl report. You will see it in the way people write about you, or do not.

The wrong noun does not make a page unreadable. It makes the page feel imported — and imported pages get fewer natural mentions.

Devices, and the way Spanish SERPs still mix intents

A lot of Spanish search still happens on a phone, in a spare minute, with a query that would have been two queries on a desktop. “Cita DNI” and “mejor seguro coche Madrid” are not the same kind of haste, but both are impatient. Long English-style guides that take four screens to reach the answer lose to a short official page, even when the guide is “better written.”

You cannot outreach your way around that shape. If the result the searcher wants is a form, your thought-leadership URL is in the wrong race. The mention might still be useful as a citation from a news piece. It will not turn the form-query into an article-query. Watch the results before you brief the campaign.

What this means for off-site work

Mentions should come from pages that already answer the same kind of query you want to rank for. A Spanish news piece about regulation is a different citation from a round-up of tools. Both can be useful. They are not substitutes. Evaluating the host page is mostly this: would a person who typed the query still be in the right place if they clicked the mention.

It also means your outreach examples should match how people search. Pitching a “complete guide” when the SERP is a set of short official answers is how you get ignored. Pitching a dataset when the SERP is full of opinion is sometimes exactly right. The index is the brief.

Tools, used as tools

Keyword tools are not useless. They are late. Use them after you have a list of queries typed by a person who lives in the market. Then see whether the tool agrees, and by how much. Large disagreements are interesting. Small ones are noise. What you should not do is start in the tool, export 400 rows, and call that the Spanish programme.

An afternoon that actually teaches you something looks like this:

  • Type the query in the market, in Spanish, on an unpersonalised window — desktop and phone if the task is impatient.
  • Write down the string, the country, and what kind of page occupies the first three positions: official form, explainer, forum, product, news.
  • Capture the modifiers people actually add — city, retailer, regulator, payment method — instead of the ones the English site already ranks for.
  • Only then open the keyword tool, and circle the rows where volume and the live SERP disagree. Those disagreements are the brief.

Autocomplete, “people also ask,” and the actual first page will teach you more in an afternoon than a volume column. They will also show you the official PDFs and the forums that a link campaign cannot displace and should not try to. Work around them, or write the page that deserves to sit beside them.

If you only remember one thing: run the queries in the market, in the language, on an unpersonalised window, and write down what kind of page is already winning. Then decide whether you need a different URL, a different mention, or both. The campaign sequence assumes you have done that reading. Skipping it is how Spanish programmes spend a year polishing the wrong object.

Keep a short log of the queries you actually ran: the string, the country, the kind of result that occupied the first three positions. That log is more useful than a volume export when you brief publishers later. It also stops the meeting where someone asks why a product URL is not ranking for a government-form query. You will have the SERP in front of you. The campaign will have a chance.
